Losing the Love Handles

Trainer Mitch’s 3-Part Strategy

For so many of us, it is the one part of our body that we just love to hate. b2ap3_thumbnail_love-handles.jpg

Love handles are the layer of subcutaneous fat that covers up your sexy six-pack, spills over your belt, and transforms your mid-section into a “muffin top.”  Love handles have a reputation for being stubborn and hard to lose, which is why anyone who is serious about shedding these unsightly fat deposits is advised to consult a professional – like Club Julian personal trainer Mitch Conner.  “Men, women, college kids, middle-aged adults, seniors – you can’t escape it, it is a problem for so many people,” he says.  “It is a tough area to target.”  

In addition to avoiding saturated fats and cutting down on carbs in your diet, here are a few of Mitch’s suggestions for combatting unsightly baggage around your mid-section:

1)Ramp up the cardio.  

When your body burns fat, it takes it from all over, not just from areas where you have fat deposits like love handles.  So by intensifying your current cardio routine, you will consequently burn fat in more areas of your body.  Mitch also recommends reducing the rest periods in between strength training sets, because it helps speed up your metabolism to burn more fat.    

2)Don’t Ignore The Core.  

“Everything starts with your core; it is the foundation.  So, a good abdominal workout is a key,” explains Mitch.  He says that too many people don’t properly prioritize their abdominal workouts as part of their regular strength training routine, viewing them as optional add-ons only if they have time.  Or conversely, many people will overdue it initially with really intense abdominal workouts that are unsustainable long-term.    

Mitch suggests starting with simple abdominal crunches.  He says to be careful not to use your arms and shoulders too much to perform the crunching motion.  Instead, make the abs do the work in a slow and controlled “squeeze.”  For the hard-to-target oblique, or lateral abdominal muscles, he recommends using the machines in Club Julian’s ab circuit training area.  “A lot of people don’t use the ab machines in the Club because they don’t know how – but the equipment is really good,” says Mitch.  “Don’t be afraid to ask a trainer for help – that’s our job.”

And Mitch’s secret strategy for working away the love handles?  Planks.  “A lot of people forget about them, but they are highly underrated, and really effective for building the core,” he explains.  A plank is an isometric exercise where you support your body weight on your hands, forearms, or elbows for an extended time period.  Side planks are most commonly used to strengthen the oblique muscles to combat love handles.  Click here for an example

3)Have a Plan.
